AFTER ONLY A WEEK, NEW CROATIAN DAILY '24 SATA' UNDER THE BRUNT OF BANS AND LAWSUITS
09.03.2005: STINA/SAFAX
After only a week in press, new daily newspaper experienced its first ban. Split businessman Željko Kerum, the owner of a chain of large retail stores, does not want to see “24 Sata” in and around his shops any more, due to the text on the purchase of a Lamborghini, while his workers are on hold, or living on minimal salaries.

The owner of the press distribution company Tim Press said he was informed not to send “24 Sata” to Kerum’s shops any more, and all that happened after it publicised a text on Kerum’s new vehicle. Lendiæ said he was not told why they did not want “24 Sata” any more, however, when he saw the cover page, “he understood all”.

Besides Kerum, several other persons are also discontent with their mention in “24 Sata”. So, the lawsuits against this newspaper, after only a week in press, have been announced by Tomislav Jeliæ, President of Town Organisation of the Croatian Block, and Iviæ Pašaliæ, President of the Croatian Block, because the article titled “Milan Bandiæ: All my Men”, characterised them as members of Bandiæ’s criminal organisation.

“When a lie is repeated one hundred times, it becomes the truth, and for that reason lies should be unmasked straight away”, commented Jeliæ for Vjesnik, adding that this newspaper uses notorious slanders, and leaves impression that the text was agreed in the centre of opposition HNS and SDP parties, due to the forthcoming local elections.

The editor-in-chief of “24 Sata”, Matija Babiæ, considers the ban and lawsuits as the best evidence that “24 Sata” is the only independent off-line medium, and that it is doing a good job.

“Everyone wonders who ordered those texts against Kostadinov, Bandiæ, Pašaliæ or Kerum. We are only doing our job. And, there’s no need for orders, we enjoy it”, emphasised Babiæ.
